Google+ follows Facebook into gaming

Gaming is a key reason behind Facebooks success; now Google+ has also hopped aboard the gaming bandwagon.

Many of us are still not on Google+. Still waiting for that elusive invite. But if you have already made it into the select circle of Google+ users, you might be able to play some really interesting games. Google has begun introducing games on its network. Some of the highly popular games like Angry Birds from Rovio, Bejeweled Blitz from PopCap Games and most notably, Zynga Poker, have already become available.

Gaming on social networking sites has turned out to be a big business. Case in point is Zynga, which has been able to build a thriving gaming business on Facebook. Recently, when Zynga filed for an IPO, it declared that it earned $90 million in profit on sales of $597 million last year. Much of that money has come through users that the company finds on Facebook. Zynga games like Farmville or Cityville have attained a cult status on Facebook.

Google+ might not have access to established social games like Farmville or Cityville, but the social network has been growing rapidly. Within few months of its launch, it has started rivalling the existing networks.

In its blog post announcement, regarding the new gaming feature on Google+, Google said, were adding games to Google+. With the Google+ project [remember, it's still in beta, and Google constantly refers to it as a project], we want to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to the web. But sharing is about more than just conversations. We want to make playing games online just as fun, and just as meaningful, as playing in real life.

According to sources, Google also started contacting software developers, who have been clamouring to build apps for Google+. As of now the company seems to be interested in partnering with only a few game developers, but eventually it would open the doors to other developers. Google insists, that it will invite developers slowly, as their strategy was to emphasise on the quality of apps over quantity.
