In the first half of the year, Chinas telecommunications sector revenues grew by 10.1 percent surpassing that of the GDP for the first time since 2007. The figures were released to the media by Zhang Feng, director of the telecom development department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), in Beijing. Zhang said, A lasting sound macro economy creates a favourable environment for rapid growth in the telecommunications sector.
The number of mobile users in China has increased by 6.15 million and broadband Internet users by 1.55 million in the first half. Zhang opined that the Chinese people were more willing to spend on telecommunications services, as there was rise in incomes for all sections of the society. The incomes of urban and rural residents increased 7.5 percent and 13.7 percent respectively in the first six months from the same period last year.
Zhang also attributed the growth in revenue to the upgraded information network infrastructure and transition to an integrated information service industry. According to the MIIT figures, telecommunications providers invested $22.2 billion in upgrading infrastructures in the first half, an increase of 56.5 percent year-on-year. The data collected from the three top mobile operators in the country shows that the country had 906.8 million mobile subscribers by the end of June this year.
