In New Delhi: A new report from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) says that India added 20.2 million new mobile users in February, taking the total to 791.38 million. However, IANS contests this claim and says that only 562.98 million subscribers were active based on Visitor Location Register (VLR) records maintained by the telcos.
Bharti Airtel leads with 159 mn total users, and the company added 3.20 mn in February. Reliance Communications stood second with 132.18 mn subscribers. While the share of urban subscribers declined to 66.36% from 66.42%, rural subscribers went up to 33.64%, the report adds. The total telephone subscriber base in the country has reached 826.25 million, registering a growth of 2.50%, the overall tele-density in India is now 69.29%.
