Do Qualifications and Certifications Determine Your Salary Package?

Education and Certifications, do matter as they largely determine the IT Manager’s salary package as per the findings of the our survey with inputs from over 500 senior IT Managers. Certifications play a vital role in any IT Manager’s career. They help in building the employee credentialls and enable him to take the job seriously and enjoy the same, as it gets more relevant. Most IT managers believe that it will help them gain domain expertise and provide them the authority on the technology. The fundamental career goal for an IT manager is to stay abreast of the rapidly changing IT environment, and catering to the constant demand from business to stay relevant.

The findings indicate the kind of certifications the respondents pursue to grow in their career are  PMP (Project Management Professional) , ITIL, Prince2 (Projects in controlled environment) and MCP.  Apart from the other certifications, PMP has been observed to be the most popular certication with 18 per cent of the total number of respondents  being  certified in PMP while 12 per cent of them being qualified in ITIL program.

Most IT managers find PMP to be a critical certification as any individual can grow from the position of an IT Manager to a Project Manager. Project managers are in high demand, and earn good compensation as it’s globally certified. In most of the US based companies, for all IT related projects, standards are maintained using PMI principles whereas standardisation in PRINCE2 certification takes the IT managers a long way. ITIL professionals can measure the IT service performance, and improve the overall efficiency and productivity, response time, communication within the organisation and with valuable customers. 

Educational qualification seem to have had its role in fetching them lucrative packages. The study indicates  100 per cent of the respondents from Life Sciences background have completed masters degree compared to only 9 per cent post graduate degree holders from Engineering and Technology discipline. 73 per cent of respondents from Engineering and Technology background stopped at the bachelors degree and 80 per cent of them in electronics too chose not to pursure further education in the same discpline post graduation. In computer applications, 37 per cent of respondents have completed their post grate diploma and degree.  Very surprisingly, 13 per cent who are holding IT positions from commerce background have completed the PhD. Most IT managers believe that it will help them scale up.
