In Akshaya Patra Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that provides classroom lunches for underprivileged children across India plans to install GPS tracking devices on all its moveable assets.
Akshaya Patra has been on a technology drive lately and initiated to take up GPS pilot study to track 70 odd vehicles in the city.
Talking to IT Next, Vinay Kumar, Head ERP, Akshaya Patra said, Since the NGO has assigned vans to carry food every day for the malnourished underprivileged children, we felt it was crucial to track the vehicles and ensure it is delivered safe.
The NGO hopes to cut down on high fuel costs and save on time taken to reach the various destinations. Besides, it would also help in communicating and compiling data while the vehicles are on the roads.
The NGO has over 350 odd moveable assets that ply across the length and breadth of the country and so needs a good GPS tracking device to check movement. With the fuel costs soaring up every week, it becomes imperative for any organization to look at ways to cut down costs.
Our objective behind going in for the GPS is to streamline the supply and business process to have information in real time, adds Kumar.
The NGO does central procurement using an e-platform and physical platform for transaction. The GPS is integrated with ERP as part of e-procurement process for better information. They have started trading on the commodity exchange MCX, NCDEX through Food Corporation of India. Going forward will trade in oils, dal, rice, wheat, sugar, jaggery and spices on the futures commodity exchange. The NGO has plans to install RFID, biometrics on all its moveable assets for commodity tracking.
Akshaya Patra provides lunch for nearly 1.3 million children across 8 states from 18 kitchens located across India. It plans to reach out to 5 million by 2020 thus covering almost the entire country.
